Reconstitution of a Secondary Cell Wall in a Secondary Cell Wall-Deficient Arabidopsis Mutant
The secondary cell wall constitutes a rigid frame of cells in plant tissues where rigidity is required. Deposition of the secondary cell wall in fiber cells contributes to the production of wood in woody plants. The secondary cell wall is assembled through co-operative activities of many enzymes, and their gene expression is precisely regulated by a pyramidal cascade of transcription factors. D...
متن کاملCell elongation in Arabidopsis hypocotyls involves dynamic changes in cell wall thickness.
Field-emission scanning electron microscopy was used to measure wall thicknesses of different cell types in freeze-fractured hypocotyls of Arabidopsis thaliana. Measurements of uronic acid content, wall mass, and wall volume suggest that cell wall biosynthesis in this organ does not always keep pace with, and is not always tightly coupled to, elongation. In light-grown hypocotyls, walls thicken...
متن کاملCell wall regeneration in Chlamydomonas: accumulation of mRNAs encoding cell wall hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins.
The unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is surrounded by a cell wall composed entirely of hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs). When the walls of vegetative cells are removed with the enzyme gamete autolysin (g-lysin), they regenerate a matrix within 3-4 hr. In vitro translation of mRNAs isolated from g-lysin-treated cells showed significant increases and decreases in abundance of s...
متن کاملThe Incorporation of d-Glucosamine into Glycolipids and Glycoproteins of Membrane Preparations from Phaseolus aureus Hypocotyls.
Radioactivity from d-glucosamine-(14)C is incorporated into particulate fractions of hypocotyls of Phaseolus aureus (mung bean) seedlings. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the sodium dodecyl sulfate-solubilized materials revealed that several polypeptide components varying considerably in molecular weight had become radioactive during the incubation. A considerable amount of (14)C was also...
متن کاملLipid peroxidation in peribacteroid membranes from French-bean nodules.
Enriched peribacteroid membranes were prepared from Phaseolus vulgaris nodules and, in the presence of metleghemoglobin and H(2)O(2), membranal lipid peroxidation was observed. The initial rate of the reaction was low and increased with time. Ferrous leghemoglobin was unable to induce this peroxidation with H(2)O(2). Thus, it appears that leghemoglobin (IV) is not the activated species involved...
